Talks to determine the route of a regional oil pipeline resumed yesterday in Kampala as a delegation from Uganda, Kenya and Tanzania narrowed down to three options for the export of crude oil.

The Kenya delegation, led by Energy Cabinet Secretary Charles Keter, flew in on Tuesday to push for the two neighbours to either adopt the Mombasa or Lamu pipeline route.

They will harmonise findings on the three proposed routes — Lamu, Mombasa and Tanga — as a destination for the $4 billion infrastructure project ahead of the 13th Northern Corridor Integration Projects Summit due in Kampala on April 23.

The final decision on the route is expected to be announced at the Heads of States Summit. Yesterday, Ugandan officials were tight-lipped on the course of discussions. One official however cited the “wayward high stakes involved”.

The Ugandan team is led by Energy Ministry PS Kabagambe Kalisa and technocrats at the Petroleum Directorate (formerly Petroleum Exploration and Production Department), headed by Mr Ernest Rubondo.
