Two students died and 33 others were injured after the driver of the bus they were travelling in lost control as he negotiated a sharp bend at Co-operative University College of Kenya in Karen.

A report from the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) says the "self-involving" incident could have been avoided if the vehicle had been driven more carefully.

"At the time of the crash the Public Service Vehicle was overloaded with university students who were precariously hanging on the vehicle rooftop, front and others were crammed at the door," the report says.

The press statement, sent to Nation by the agency's deputy director and head of corporate communications, Mr Dominic M. Kabiru, indicates that the driver was drunk.

Consequently, NTSA Director Francis Meja said through the statement that the agency would rein in drivers of public service vehicles who contravene road regulations.

The college's principal, Douglas Shitanda, pointed out that the students were campaigning for the Students' Governing Council elections slated for March 3.

Prof Shitanda, through a press release, added that the casualties, some of whom have been discharged, were taken to various hospitals, among them Karen Hospital, Coptic Hospital and Kenyatta National Hospital.
