Two police officers have been reported missing after a suspected Al-Shabaab attack at the Hamey patrol base in Garissa County on Thursday morning.

The attackers stole a machine gun, about 1,000 rounds of ammunition, police uniforms and a Toyota Land cruiser.

National Police Service spokesman George Kinoti said that about 50 armed raiders stormed the station in two Land cruisers but were repulsed by the officers.

They retreated, but later returned in a lorry and fired three bombs at the camp, forcing the officers to withdraw for cover.

A total of 14 officers were at the post during the attack, but by yesterday evening, only 12 had been accounted for.

An officer who was seriously injured has been airlifted to Nairobi for specialised treatment while three others were taken to the Dadaab hospital.

Police have intensified operations following fears that the attackers, armed with police weapons and vehicle, may strike again.

This comes hot on the heels of the killing on September 11 of three women after they attacked a Mombasa police station.
