Three soldiers linked to a series of robberies in Kiserian and Ngong

Two suspected terrorists were shot dead on Wednesday and a hand grenade and a pistol loaded with five bullets recovered.

They were shot by police on Eastleigh’s 12th Street, next to the Kenya Bus Service garage.

Nairobi deputy county commander Moses Ombati said the suspects had attempted to commit a robbery at the Diamond Palace Hotel.

Police are also looking for the third suspect who escaped. He said investigations will show if the three were involved in the attack against Kamukunji MP Yusuf Hassan last year.

Mr Hassan was seriously injured last December when attackers hurled a grenade that killed two people after evening prayers at Hidaya Mosque.

“We will finger print them and check their records so that we can know if they were involved. What I can say for now is that they are Kenyans,” said Mr Ombati.

The three were ambushed by police, who had been tipped off. “They were targeting a specific person who was in the hotel and had cash which he was taking to a bank,” said Mr Ombati.

Elsewhere in Embakasi, Mr Ombati said, two other suspects were killed and a Browning pistol recovered on Tuesday night. One of the suspects was shot dead by police while his accomplice was cornered and beaten by a mob.

In Ngong, three Kenyan soldiers were arrested after a botched robbery. Police recovered a pistol that had officially been issued to one suspect, who works for the military police. Also found were their military staff cards.

LINKED TRO OTHER CRIMES

Investigations linked them to robberies in Ngong and Kiserian areas.

The three are alleged to have tried to carjack a PSV next to Petro Petrol station in Ngong but when they failed, they went to Kiserian and then came back to Ngong.

Kajiado North police chief Mohamed Farah said the public had tipped off the police who arrested them.

The suspect working for the military police was found with a Browning pistol, serial number 245NV03915, loaded with 10 bullets.

The military police supports civil authority in maintaining law and order.

The other two suspects were an IT specialist and an air condition technician. All three are based at the National Military Command Centre in Karen.

The arrests come in the wake of increased insecurity linked to serving and ex-security officers.

Last month, another KDF soldier, Isaiah wanjala Kulumba, was charged in a Nakuru court on suspicion of having goods stolen from Nairobi’s Westgate Mall. The case was later withdrawn in unclear circumstances.
