UN staff accused of assault freed on Sh10m bond

A UN employee accused of battering his estranged lover has been freed on a Sh10 million bond.
A Nairobi court ordered Mr Alphonse Kambu to pay an additional Sh2 million cash bail and deposit his passport in court.
Chief Magistrate Daniel Ogembo ordered the accused to secure a Kenyan surety for the bond.
The magistrate also warned the accused to desist from contacting the complainant, Ms Ruth Gakii.
The magistrate dismissed an application by the prosecution that he be incarcerated until the case is determined.
Prosecutor Jacinta Nyamusi said the suspect had been threatening the complainant and was likely to interfere with prosecution witnesses.
Mr Kambu, a native of Papua New Guinea, was last Thursday charged with causing grievous harm to Ms Gakii on October 18 at a house in Kasarani, Nairobi.
