Ugandan soldiers have stepped up patrols on Migingo Island in Lake Victoria in a bid to flush out pirates.

One of the soldiers told the Nation that they fear possible revenge attacks from pirates after they gunned down three of their colleagues on Saturday.

The soldiers have divided themselves into three groups that are patrolling the area.

“We are on high alert and we are leaving nothing to chance. We are prepared for a battle with them,” the soldier told the Nation on the phone Monday.

The soldiers killed the three pirates after they stumbled on them on the shores of the island.

The suspects, believed to be Tanzanians, were on board an engine-powered boat that was confiscated during the operation.

It was towed to the Migingo Island police post. Three other suspects were arrested and taken to Namayingo District in Uganda.

Migingo Beach Management Unit Chairman John Obunge welcomed the operation.
