Uhuru Kenyatta names Levi Mghalu Navy Commander

What you need to know:

  • In the shuffle announced Tuesday, Colonel Fatumah Ahmed was promoted to Brigadier, making her the first female officer to rise to the senior rank.

  • Maj-Gen Ngewa Mukala who has been the Navy Commander left to become the Commandant of the Defence Staff College.

Brigadier Levi Franklin Mghalu has been promoted to a major-general and appointed Kenya Navy commander in top-level military changes made by President Uhuru Kenyatta.

In the shuffle announced Tuesday, Colonel Fatumah Ahmed was promoted to Brigadier, making her the first female officer to rise to the senior rank.

Maj-Gen Ngewa Mukala, who has been the Navy commander, left to become the commandant of the Defence Staff College.

Ministry of Defence spokesman Bogita Ongeri said the President made the changes on the advice of the Defence Council.

“President Kenyatta and Commander-In-Chief of the Defence Forces, on the advice of the Defence Council, Chaired by Defence Cabinet Secretary Raychelle Omamo made  postings, promotions and appointments of the officers of the Kenya Defence Forces,” he said in a statement.

After the promotion, Brigadier Ahmed was named the managing director of the Defence Forces Medical Insurance Scheme while Maj-Gen Owino was posted to Kenya Military Academy as commandant.

Ten other colonels were promoted to the rank of brigadier and given new positions.

They are George Odhiambo Walwa (chief of operations at Defence headquarters); Henry Noah Ofulah (Kahawa Garrison commander); Muta Nderitu (director, International Peace Support Training Centre); Godfrey Aumah Buluma (chief of operations, Plans & Training, Army headquarters); James Magige Gitiba (Kenya Army chief of logistics); and Simon Mureithi Wachira (deputy commandant, Defence Staff College).

Others are Vincent Naisho Loonena (Mtongwe Base commander); Martin Kizito Onyango Ong’oyi (head of personnel at Defence headquarters); and Daniel Kimutai Pyaban (Rapid Deployment Capability commander).
