President Uhuru Kenyatta has urged universities to set up endowments to get extra funds to support their activities.

The President said universities in other countries have endowments, which have given the learning institutions stability instead of solely relying on public grants.

He said endowments would encourage sponsors to contribute to the development of the universities.

He said his government would support endowments should they be started but cautioned that the higher-learning institutions should ensure the funds were well utilised.

“My government would be only too happy to work with benefactors who undertook projects of this kind.

“My government and ordinary Kenyans will expect that their funds be used in the most prudent and transparent manner possible,” he said Tuesday after laying a foundation stone for the University of Nairobi Towers.

On a lighter note, President Kenyatta said he had told Mr Ruto, who is a PhD student at the University of Nairobi, to be a good student.

“As President, I have done my part, always encouraging him to work hard and please his professors and supervisors in order to do well and not to embarrass us,” he said.
