A Kenyatta University student was on Wednesday charged with impersonating Inspector-General of Police Joseph Boinnet and Directorate of Criminal Investigations boss Ndegwa Muhoro on Facebook.

The prosecution alleges John Kibowen Cheboiwo, a computer science student, opened a false Facebook account in the name of Mr Muhoro and defrauded unsuspecting Kenyans of over Sh500,000.

The student is alleged to have pretended that he would fast-track investigations on their cases.

He was freed on a Sh300,000 bond.

Police say the accused obtained Sh100,750 from James Gakobo Muriithi by pretending that he would help him get details of his father’s estate from the Land ministry. He allegedly committed the offence between December 21 and 26 last year.

The student is also accused of obtaining Sh425,000 from Daniel Otieno Adero on diverse dates between December 28 last year and January 6, 2016.

The accused allegedly pretended that he was in a position to fast-track investigations into the murder of Mr Adero’s brother, who was killed in Nyamira County in the “line of his duty.”

Another charge stated that between May 22 and May 30 this year at an unknown place, with the intent to defraud, he falsely represented himself to be Mr Boinnet by opening a Facebook account in the name of the police boss.

The case will be heard on August 8.
