UoN staff urged to be patient over salaries delay

For the second month running, staff at the University of Nairobi will get their salaries late.
Acting deputy Vice-chancellor Isaac Mbeche, in charge of finance and planning, in a communication to the staff, said the university has not received capitation for the month of September from the government for purposes of disbursement of this month’s salaries.
“The management is working in consultation with the relevant authorities to ensure that this capitation is urgently released,” Prof Mbeche said.

He went on: “In this regard, September salaries will be released immediately upon receipt of capitation from the government. Let us be patient as we await for the release of these funds.”
The situation was the same last month at the University, which raised concerns over reduction in capitation from the government.
The university uses about Sh770 million monthly to pay staff.
SALARY INCREASE
Meanwhile the 31 universities are also supposed to pay their staff scaled up salaries this month.
Universities Academic Staff Union (Uasu) gave the institutions until the end of this month to implement the increase that they enjoyed in June before the universities reverted to old salaries.
Uasu Secretary General Constantine Wasonga on Tuesday said lecturers will wait until the end of the month to see if the government will implement the increase.
“We gave them until end of September and after that we will decided the next course of action,” he said.
