Laikipia University has shut down its six satellite campuses across the country after failing to meet some of the requirements imposed by the Commission of University Education (CUE).

The affected campuses are located in Embu, Eldoret, Naivasha, Maralal, Nairobi and Nyahururu towns.

The affected students have been instructed to report to the main campus beginning in January.

The university, located 14 kilometers from Nyahururu town on the Nyahururu-Nakuru highway, cited challenges in meeting standards set by the regulatory commission as reasons for the closure.

Continuing students will constitute the first batch of students to relocate to the main campus in January while school-based students will report to the main campus for their April 2017 teaching and examination session.

The university’s registrar of academic affairs told students who are unable to relocate to the main campus to join other universities of their choice.

“The university shall issue transcripts up to the last semester of study,” said an August 3 memo to staff and students by Registrar of Academic Affairs Raphael Kiugu.

Earlier this year, CUE announced that some universities would be closed for failing to meet the minimum requirements for operation.

CUE chairman Henry Thairu, while presiding over the 11th graduation ceremony at Kabarak University, said the agency was finalising vetting that would see some campuses shut down, including those of private universities.

CUE's move is aimed at safeguarding the integrity of higher education.

CUE has previously blacklisted several institutions of higher learning in the country for failing to meet the minimum requirements to operate.
