Bungoma senator-elect Moses Wetangula escaped unhurt when his car came under gunfire along Nairobi's Mbagathi Way.

The incident occurred a few minutes to 11pm on Thursday.

The senator had just arrived in the city from Mombasa and was on his way home to Karen from the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport.

Shots were fired from a car that had been parked across the road, shattering the windscreen and grazing the roof.

Accompanied by former Prime Minister Raila Odinga and his spokesperson Maseme Machuka, Mr Wetangula proceeded to the Kilimani Police Station to record a statement.

ASSASSINATION ATTEMPT

“I take this as an assassination attempt. The police have to move with speed and open investigations into the matter,” he said.

According to him, the threats began after he spoke out over irregularities in the rail tendering process.

Mr Odinga termed the incident as unfortunate saying:

“I have been to the scene of the crime. We want the government to take the opportunity to investigate fully and we leave the matter to the police.”

Nairobi County Police Commander Benson Kibue said officers who were stationed on Ngong Road saw Mr Wetangula's car driving towards them and were informed of the incident.

They then proceeded to Kilimani Police station to record a statement.
