A woman arrested in Nairobi for allegedly plotting to kill her estranged husband was on Monday charged with conspiracy to commit murder.

Monica Kalondu Wambua was jointly charged with Papias Karinga Mureithi for allegedly planning to kill Eric Njiiri Murigu.

The two appeared before Kibera Chief Magistrate Ann Ong’injo and denied committing the offence on May 7 at Tamasha restaurant in Karen, Nairobi.

A defence lawyer claimed Ms Wambua and Mr Murigu were to file a lawsuit on the division of their matrimonial property.

The lawyer alleged that Mr Murigu was "escalating" a matrimonial case to criminal proceedings.

The prosecution said the case was reported at the Karen Police Station as it was nearer to the restaurant where the alleged murder plot was hatched.

Ms Zafida Chege, the prosecutor, opposed an application for bond, saying Mr Mureithi had jumped bail in another case.

“He was arrested in Lamu after jumping bail in a case of obtaining money by false pretences,” said the prosecutor.

The court, however, said the prosecution had not given enough reasons to compel the court to deny the accused bail.

The accused were released on bond of Sh1 million each or Sh500,000 cash bail.
