Woman charged with robbing Makueni MP Daniel Maanzo

A woman found in possession of a mobile phone which was stolen during a raid at Makueni MP Daniel Maanzo’s Nairobi residence in February was Thursday charged with robbing the politician.

Ms Grace Adhiambo Otieno denied she had anything to do with the February 19 incident at the politician’s Kisembe-Kipevu home in Lang’ata where armed gangsters held the family hostage and relieved them of property valued at Sh500,000.

The first charge stated that on the material day while armed with a pistol and other crude weapons, Ms Adhiambo jointly with others not before court robbed Mr Maanzo of Sh10,000, one iPad valued at Sh110,000, his gold decoration of the Elder of the Burning Spear, a camera valued at Sh25,000 and spare keys for various cars and that during the time of the robbery used actual violence against the politician.

A second charge stated she robbed Ms Catherine Mutheu Mwia of Sh10,000, two mobile phones, a US embassy gate pass card and a camera valued at Sh24,000.

Ms Adhiambo admitted a third charge of being found with Ms Mutheu’s phone at her house in Dagoretti but denied knowing it had been stolen or illegally acquired from the owner.

The mother of two was granted a bond of Sh2 million.

She asked the court to relax her bond terms and a magistrate ordered a probation officer to profile her and hand in a report on the mention date on June 2. Hearing was set for July 8.

HELD HOSTAGE

Mr Maanzo and his wife were attacked and held hostage at their residence during the robbery.

The assailants who were also armed with machetes and clubs hit the legislator on the head and he was later admitted to hospital for a head scan.

The MP later recounted how the attackers gained entry into his house at around 3am after cutting window grills.

According to the police, the suspects cut the window grills and went straight to the househelp’s bedroom.

They then proceeded to Mr Maanzo’s bedroom where they demanded for cash and other valuables from the couple.

An Administration Police officer who was the politician’s bodyguard was found intoxicated at the time of the incident and could not explain himself comprehensively.

Mr Maanzo, Ms Mutheu and the househelp, Ms Patricia Ndunge Muoki, are listed as witnesses.
