A public toilet built by the National Youth Service in Kibera, Nairobi County, was set ablaze Monday evening by youth who were demonstrating against Devolution Cabinet Secretary Ann Waiguru.

Tension was high and there was a heavy police presence in Kibera on Tuesday morning.

A statement from police headquarters stated that the youth, numbering about 300, started demonstrating at 7pm at Kibera’s Olympic stage, where they lit bonfires and barricaded the road.

“The youths were dispersed by Administration Police from the nearby chief's camp but later regrouped at Katwekera at 9pm where they set ablaze the toilet constructed by NYS,” said the police report.

According to the statement, the youth were protesting against a move by another group from the area to participate in a demonstration in city streets in support of Ms Waiguru against claims of alleged corruption at the NYS.

The statement further said the protesters accused those who had taken part in the demonstration of deliberately spoiling the name of former Prime Minister Raila Odinga by claiming that he did not initiate development projects in the area when he was MP.
