A chief was seriously injured when brewers and distillers turned violent and beat him thoroughly.

Elburgon’s Kasarani location chief Ezekiel Karanja is admitted to Elburgon Health Centre following the attack by armed youths, who accused him of inciting residents to raid a chang’aa den minutes after the illicit brew had been brought to the area.

The youths pounced on Mr Karanja, who had gone to an abandoned homestead alone.

He sustained deep cuts on his forehead and hands.

The attack prompted residents to raid the chang’aa den and destroy more than 800 litres of the liquor.

Area ward representative Florence Wambui appealed to the government to provide chiefs with security when conducting raids.

Release on bond

“The government should now provide local administrators with firearms to avoid cases like what we have experienced today,” said Ms Wambui.

She cited an increase in cases in which suspects are released on “unreasonably small bonds”, which do not deter the brewers and distillers from continuing with the illegal business.

Molo MP Jacob Macharia condemned the attack on the chief and said raids on illicit brew dens should continue.
