Dar es Salaam. Tanzania Immigration Services Department (TISD) has arrested eight Ethiopian nationals over illegal immigration.

Addressing a press conference at TISD headquarters on Thursday, September 21, TISD Acting Commissioner General Edward Chogero said the eight suspects were arrested last night in Kongowe in Kigamboni District.

"They boarded a truck owned by Dangote Industries Company Limited travelling to Mtwara. We also arrested four Tanzanians in relation to the incident," he said.

"I would like to take this opportunity to warn truck owners and drivers to distance themselves from human trafficking business as stern measures will be taken against them. This includes house owners, who use their facilities as hideouts because Section 54 of the Immigration Act (RE 2016) empowers the court to nationalise facilities involved in human trafficking," he added.

He said more than 5,700 foreigners had been arrested from January to June this year over illegal immigration. “While a few of them have been prosecuted, the majority have been deported to their countries of origin,” he noted.
