Uganda top presidential challenger Kizza Besigye was Thursday arrested by police as polls closed, his Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) party said.

"Besigye has been arrested and we do not know where he is," the FDC said, without giving further details.

There was no immediate police confirmation, but Besigye has been repeatedly detained by police in the past, and is commonly released without charge hours later.
