CAIRO, Monday

Egypt’s interim President Adli Mansour issued a decree promoting military chief and Defence Minister Abdel-Fattah al-Sisi to the rank of field marshal, the state TV reported on Monday.

Sisi carried out the overthrow of former Islamist president Mohamed Morsy in early July 2013 and set forth a future roadmap for the country including a new constitution which will be followed by parliamentary and presidential polls.

Sisi’s popularity has been growing in the turmoil-stricken state since Morsy’s removal, with a lot of voices calling him to run for president in the upcoming elections.

The military chief neither confirmed nor denied his intention to compete in the upcoming presidential race.

On January 11, a few days before the constitutional referendum, Sisi made the clearest statement on the issue, saying that his candidacy for presidency must be based on “a popular demand and a mandate from the army.”
