The Kenya National Union of Teachers has now sued the teachers' employer for contempt of court.

In the case filed at the High Court in Nairobi, Knut accuses the Teachers Service Commission and Cabinet and principal secretaries of Finance and Labour of refusing to respect court orders to raise teachers' basic pay by 50 to 60 per cent.

The Court of Appeal last month ordered the TSC to pay the raised salaries until its appeal is heard and determined.

Knut argues that the orders were not reversed by the Supreme Court, and that the TSC's refusal to pay was likely to paralyse learning.

CASE REFERRED

Employment and Labour Relations judge Monica Mbaru on Thursday directed Knut to issue copies of the case documents to the sued parties to prepare a response.

She also referred the matter to Justice Nduma Nderi, who first heard the case before the matter went to the Court of Appeal and eventually to the Supreme Court.

The case will be heard on September 21.

Separately, the TSC has sued Knut and Kuppet in a case challenging the unions' decision to call a national teachers' strike.

Judge Mbaru of the labour court on Thursday directed that the matter be heard on Friday.
