The East African Legislative Assembly has removed embattled speaker Margaret Nantongo Zziwa from office.

The regional assembly will now proceed to elect a new Speaker from Uganda by Friday as required by the rules of the House.

“We have finally achieved what we wanted and we expect that we shall elect another speaker who will lead us through the next year when we resume for serious business,” said Kenyan MP Peter Mathuki.

Dr Zziwa had been suspended following a motion passed in November in Nairobi barring her from exercising the duties of Speaker pending the finalisation of the investigations into the allegations facing.

Uganda’s Chris Opoka-Okumu is serving in an interim capacity to handle proceedings related to the process for removing the Speaker under provisions of Rule 9 of the Rules of Procedure.

Under the provisions of the rules, a motion seeking to remove the Speaker is referred by the House to the Legal Rules and Privileges Committee for investigation within a specific time frame.
