1,441 killed in Ghana road crashes

As many as 1,441 people were killed in road crashes in Ghana between January and September this year, local media reported on Wednesday.

The deaths occurred from 10,061 crashes nationwide and involved 15,600 vehicles, ‘‘commercial vehicles accounting for 6,871 of this number, followed by 6,643 private vehicles and 2,086 motor cycles’’, The Finder newspaper, a private daily, reported on Wednesday.

In 2013, the Motor Traffic and Transport Unit (MTTU) of the Ghana Police Service said 2,096 lives were lost and 12,655 persons were injured nationwide through motor accidents.

Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Samuel Sasu-Mensah, Staff Officer to the Director General of the MTTU, said comparatively in 2012, the number of those who lost their lives and those who were injured through road accidents were 2,249 and 14,181 respectively.
