BAGAMOYO, Sunday

Tanzanian authorities Sunday launched a new tuna fishery strategy aimed at enabling the east African nation to reap maximum benefits from catches of tuna by foreign vessels in its Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ).

Mr Yohana Budeba, Tanzania’s Deputy Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Livestock and Fisheries Development, launched the strategy, saying it was also aimed at promoting sustainable use and management of tuna resources.

TOP 10 COUNTRIES

“Tanzania is among the top 10 countries in Africa in terms of total capture fisheries production but it only contributes 1.4 per cent to the gross domestic product,” said Mr Budeba.

The implementation of the strategy will be coordinated by the Department of Fisheries Development of Zanzibar and the Fisheries Development Division of Tanzania mainland.

The Deep Sea Fishing Authority will be mandated to regulate fishing in the EEZ while the Tanzania Fisheries Research Institute (TAFIRI) will organize and conduct fisheries research in the EEZ.

Other national, regional and international organizations, including the Indian Ocean Tuna Commission, the Southwest Indian Ocean Fisheries Commission and the International Whaling Commission will be participating in the implementation of the strategy in specific areas where they have interest.(Xinhua)
