ABUJA, Tuesday

Two teenage girls have been arrested in Nigeria's hunt for the masterminds of Saturday’s multiple bomb explosions in Abuja.

The two were arrested by police operatives at the CITEC Junction Bus Stop in the sprawling Gwarimpa estate.

The police stormed the spot where the two girls aged between 16 and 18, were standing as if waiting for somebody.

The girls, wearing hijab but not covering their faces, were waiting under the pedestrian bridge when the operatives arrived in two vehicles.

The National Emergency Management Agency (Nema) has said 26 of the 39 victims of the Nyanya and Kuje bomb blasts were still receiving treatment in hospitals across the Federal Capital Territory.

The Coordinator of Nema in Abuja, Mr Ishaya Chonoko, said 13 other victims had been treated and discharged.
He said 20 people died in the explosions.

Meanwhile, the Inspector-General of Police, Mr Solomon E. Arase, has deployed officers on a massive stop-and-search in and around Abuja after the suicide bombings.

Mr Arase urged the public not to panic as the Nigeria Police Force was prepared to ensure adequate security for people and property.

He described those behind the bombings as cowards, saying no matter their aim, Nigeria would not accommodate terrorists’ acts.

Preliminary investigations revealed the attacks were carried out by two suicide bombers - a male and a female.
