Kenyans in Diaspora celebrate Lupita Nyong’o

Soon after learning of Lupita’s big win at the Academy Awards Monday, many Kenyans took to the social media to compliment her.

Messages of goodwill came from across the globe following her fete of winning the Best Supporting Actress Award during the 86th Academy awards ceremony streamed live from the Dolby Theater in Los Angeles California.

“I never imagined that I would live to see a Kenyan win an Oscar,” said Kagendo Dorcas on Twitter.

“Go beautiful Lupita, the competition was stiff, but you showed the world that we too can do it” said Nyanchama Lawrence in a Facebook post.

COVETED AWARD

Lupita won the prestigious award on Sunday for her role as Patsy in 12 Years a Slave.

She received a standing ovation from the Hollywood audience after beating fellow frontrunner Jennifer Lawrence for her role in The American Hustle.

"Yes!" Lupita exclaimed as she accepted the coveted award.

"It doesn't escape me for one moment that so much joy in my life is thanks to so much pain in someone else's, and so I want to salute the spirit of Patsey, for her guidance," she said.

PROUD KENYANS

Soon after being named the winner in one of the most watched Academy Award race in recent times, she hugged her brother fighting back tears of joy.

The Kenyan community in the United States has been very supportive of Lupita since she was nominated for the award.

Denzel Musumba, a US-based Kenyan journalist told the Nation.co.ke that Lupita has made “Kenyans out here very proud of their roots.”

On Sunday, President Uhuru Kenyatta sent a message of goodwill to the Kenyan actress. (READ: Well done! Uhuru tells Lupita)

Lupita earned a similar award at the Screen Actors Guild Awards in January, chosen from some 1,000 young actresses who auditioned.
