The Commission for University Education (CUE) has revoked doctorate of philosophy degrees awarded to five students by Kisii University in December 2014.

CUE also said it does not recognise the degrees of two students who were admitted into Master Degree programmes at the institution from other local universities irregularly.

“Student admissions were highly irregular based on a postgraduate credit transfer policy that is not provided for in either the Kisii University Statutes or the Universities Standards and Guidelines, 2014,” said the Commission chairman Henry Thairu.

Prof Thairu said the affected PhD students were admitted at Kisii University from other Universities whose degrees are not recognised by the commission.

“The admission numbers of the affected students are; DED/00030/13, DAS/60037/14, DAS/60034/14, DAS/60069/14, DAS/60048/14.

The admission number for affected Master Degree programmes students are: CM/11/00429/08 and AGR/PGF/001/11.

At the same time, CUE has said it is greatly concern with failure by Kisii University to observe regulations guiding the establishment of campuses.

“The Commission is, therefore considering auditing all the systems of Kisii University to ensure quality in the delivery of university education,” said Prof Thairu in a public notice.

The institutions’ 10 campuses out of 13 in Western, Nyanza and Rift Valley regions are set to be closed within 90 days by the commission.

The University has been asked to relocate its 15,000 students to accredited campuses.

This is after they fell below the expected threshold.

However, the university has vowed to defy the order.

The affected campuses are in Eldoret, Eldama Ravine, Nyamira, Kabarnet, Migori, Ogembo, Keroka, Kehancha, Kapenguria and Isebania.
