MKU signs MoU with China University of Petroleum

- The memorandum of understanding will be in effect for a period of five years.
- It will be discussed one year prior to its expiration and reviewed if necessary.
Mount Kenya University has entered into an academic partnership with China University of Petroleum (East China) as it moves to tap in training of experts in the lucrative oil industry.
Through the partnership, the two institutions will exchange students and develop joint scientific and or technological research projects, among others.
MKU Chairman Simon Gicharu said the purpose of the MoU is to develop academic cooperation on the basis of equality and reciprocity and to promote relations and mutual understanding between both universities.
“This MoU spells a bright future for our students and faculty.
“As you are aware, Kenya, and indeed Africa is replete with natural resources but lacks enough manpower to tap these resources,” said Dr Gicharu.
The MoU was signed by Dr Gicharu and Dr Fengchi Luan, Dean of College of International Education at China University of Petroleum.
The two institutions will jointly promote and develop academic cooperation, exchange teaching staff and research personnel and exchange of curriculum.
BEST IN PETROLEUM STUDIES
China University of Petroleum (East China) and its sister university in Beijing are considered to be among the best universities in petroleum related studies in China.
The university was founded in 1953, as Beijing Petroleum Institute.
“Empowering local communities by improving the knowledge base has always been one of our key drivers,” said MKU Vice-Chancellor Stanley Waudo.
The memorandum of understanding will be in effect for a period of five years and will be discussed one year prior to its expiration and reviewed if necessary, based on the mutual agreement of the universities, if not it will be reviewed automatically for another five years.
“Either party, upon giving a one year written notice to the other part may terminate this understanding provided that such termination will not affect the completion of any activity underway at the time,” states the MOU.
The administration of the MoU will be the responsibility of dean of the College of International Education, China University of petroleum (East China) and the Director of Global linkages at MKU.
Kenya is set to construct an oil pipeline from Lokichar to Lamu via Isiolo at a cost of Sh424 billion and it is expected to be complete by 2021.
