The chairman of the Commission for the Implementation of the Constitution, Mr Charles Nyachae, on Wednesday said he would not extend his term in office when it ends in December.
Mr Nyachae told a Senate committee that he would pave the way for another person if the commission’s term is extended beyond 2015.
“There are other Kenyans who are qualified to serve,” said Mr Nyachae.
Commissioners appeared before the Senate Committee on Legal Affairs to brief the lawmakers on the process of implementing the Constitution five years after its promulgation.
Senators took the commissioners to task to explain their decision not to push for the extension.
“Your term is coming to an end but the implementation is not over,” said Murang’a Senator Kembi Gitura (TNA).
Committee chairman Amos Wako (ODM) wants the term extended.
Commission vice-chairman Elizabeth Muli said the commissioners were not desperate to continue in office, adding that the mandate to give them an extension belonged to Parliament.
