Cord co-principal Moses Wetang’ula has said the Opposition is ready and willing to hold talks with the government over the fate of the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC).

Speaking after attending a funeral service for Mau Mau war veteran Gitu wa Kahengeri's son on Friday, Mr Wetang’ula also said he would not record a statement with the police over the killing of businessman Jacob Juma as directed by Inspector-General of Police Joseph Boinnet.

He said: "In my over 30 years as a lawyer, I have never witnessed the manner in which the police handled Mr Juma's body. They towed his body to the police station instead of the mortuary."

Mr Wetang’ula, however, urged the government to ensure that the talks are candid and devoid of lies, adding that the Coalition for Reforms and Democracy (Cord) would not allow to be taken in circles.

"Both sides must agree on having a non-biased electoral commission," said Mr Wetang’ula.

He also used the chance to sell his presidential bid, urging members of the Kikuyu community to back him in the next elections.

"This country requires that we elect leaders from different regions in a rotational manner to ensure that everyone gets to have a sense of belonging as well as a share of the national cake," he said.

On why Cord is yet to announce its flag bearer, Mr Wetang’ula said there was still a lot of time, explaining that in 2007, they decided to support Mr Mwai Kibaki just three months to the elections.

Mr Wetang’ula was accompanied by Kimilili MP Suleiman Murunga and Ford-Kenya official Jared Okello.
