Religious leaders have accused the electoral agency of complacency in determining candidates to vie in the August 8 polls.

At a press conference in Nairobi on Thursday, the clerics said the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) was undermining the EACC by allowing tainted candidates to run.

"The IEBC at least owes Kenyans an explanation on why people cited by the EACC, an agency with a mandate to check integrity, have been casually given certificates to contest," National Council of Churches of Kenya (NCCK) General-Secretary Canon Peter Karanja said on behalf of religious groups present, including catholic bishops and Muslims.

This follows a decision by the IEBC to grant certificates to 106 candidates though they were listed as being under investigation for corruption.

Of the 106, the EACC is investigating 11 running for governor, one for senator, two for county woman representative, 13 for MP, and 14 for ward representative.
