Gatundu South MP Joseph Ngugi Nyumu has died.

The MP collapsed Wednesday morning while in the bathroom at his Runda residence in Nairobi, according to Gatanga MP Humprey Kimani who addressed journalists outside Lee Funeral home.

The MP was then rushed to Nairobi Hospital branch near UN headquarters and died while doctors were attempting to resuscitate him, he said.

The body is now lying at the Lee Funeral home.

The Gatanga MP said the death of his colleague remained a mystery since Mr Nyumu was in good heath on Tuesday and was a regular gym enthusiast.

President Uhuru Kenyatta, who is a former area MP, sent his condolences to the family and relatives of the deceased.

In a statement, President Kenyatta gave a tribute to Mr Ngugi as "a successful businessman, political leader and a good manager."

"It is precisely because of these attributes that he succeeded me as MP for Gatundu South," he said.

Several MPs were headed to the late MP's Runda home Wednesday morning.
