Interior Principal Secretary Mutea Iringo on Saturday threatened legal action over claims by Deputy President William Ruto’s defence team at the International Criminal Court (ICC) that he recruited witnesses to fix Mr Ruto.

“I wish to inform you that I shall be seeking legal advice as to the remedial avenues available to me in view of your team’s continued libellous attacks on my name and integrity,” said the PS in the letter sent to Mr Karim Khan, the deputy president’s lead counsel.

During cross examination of witness P-0613, Mr Ruto’s lawyer, Shyamala Alagendra, said there were systematic plans to fix the DP in connection with the 2007/2008 post-election violence by powerful men in government.

The lawyer alleged Mr Iringo and President Uhuru Kenyatta’s advisor on political affairs Nancy Gitau were among officials who paid witnesses.

But Mr Iringo said the claims were “false, unfair and malicious”: “I am writing to repeat my earlier statement to you that I have never been involved in any alleged scheme to co-ordinate the recruitment of witnesses against the Deputy President or in any manner to defeat the cause of justice.”
