Police probe assault case involving Bahati MP Kimani Ngunjiri

Police were on Friday piecing together evidence on Thursday’s incident involving Bahati MP Kimani Ngunjiri who is alleged to have been engaged in a physical confrontation with a Nakuru-based traffic policewoman.

Nakuru Divisional Police Commander Benard Kioko said no decision had been made on the case since the first-time MP and Inspector Maria Mutheu both lodged complaints with the police, with each party claiming to have been assaulted.

“In matters involving lawmakers, we prepare a file which is forwarded to the Director of Public Prosecutions’ Office for advice on who should be charged. No one has been arrested but the matter is under investigation on who is telling the truth,” he said.

The TNA party lawmaker insisted that Inspector Mutheu ought to be arrested since she had physically assaulted and verbally abused him while the traffic policewoman lodged similar complaints, saying the MP was arrogant and had blatantly defied traffic rules by parking a motor vehicle at a spot not permitted by law.

Eyewitnesses outside Kanu House told the Nation that trouble started when the MP arrived and had his vehicle parked outside an electronic shop near the main town roundabout. He then proceeded to enter the shop to buy some items.

The traffic policewoman arrived and demanded the motor vehicle be removed from the spot as it was blocking traffic and threatened to have it towed away.

“Mheshimiwa came out of the shop and demanded to know what was happening and a bitter exchange of words ensued, with each party boasting on who is who. It quickly degenerated into a fistfight and traffic policemen manning various roads came to the officer’s rescue,” said an eyewitness.

As the MP sought refuge at the nearby Kanu offices, the motor vehicle was towed to Nakuru Police Station as investigations were launched into the matter.

On Friday, Mr Ngunjiri spent time at the Nakuru Central Police Station to record a statement, with the police insisting that the motor vehicle’s driver be charged with obstructing traffic. It is still being held at the police station.
