A policeman assigned to Ababu Namwamba as his bodyguard was on Wednesday summoned by a parliamentary team regarding a controversial recording.

The bodyguard, Bernard Odako, was asked to meet the Powers and Privileges Committee after the Budalangi MP told the team on Tuesday that it was the officer who initiated the recording of a conversation between Mr Namwamba, two other lawmakers and ODM leader Raila Odinga.

PHONE IN MEETING

Sources at the National Assembly told the Nation that Mr Namwamba said Mr Odako brought the phone to him at their meeting with Mr Odinga and ODM MPs Junet Mohammed and Samuel Arama with the recording function on.

He is reported to have told Mr Namwamba that the phone would be useful to him and the Budalangi MP only came to learn that the recording application was in use later.

Mr Namwamba had been recalled to the committee on Tuesday because all the MPs he identified as the voices in the recording — Mr Arama and Mr Mohammed — had denied they were there.

The MP had at first declined to state where and when the recording was made and by whom.
