Poor political leadership and governance is the reason behind food insecurity in Africa, United Nations General Assembly has been told.

Leaders from the African continent and agricultural experts said this a few hours after Pope Francis talked about the link between socio-economic challenges in the world to the environment.

"It is not about money or infrastructure…the moment we tackle poor leadership and governance we will stop begging," said Kanayo Nwame who is the president of International fund for Agriculture Development (IFAD).

Ghana's ex-president Mr John Kufuor said: "Africa needs to take responsibility."

This was one of the separate meetings held in the United Nations headquarters after the adoption of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Goal 13 which calls for action to tackle climate change has been linked to several other environmentally related problems that have spilled into health, nutrition and resource triggered conflicts in the continent.

The leaders and experts called on the international community to handle the issue of climate change with tactics specific to Africa.

During the discussion held at the United Nations (UN) headquarters in New York, it was said that the international community has failed to see the manner in which Africans' tradition is intricately wired into the challenge of climate change that has threatened food security in the continent.
