Former Nairobi Mayor freed as incitement probe starts

Investigations into incitement claims against former Nairobi mayor George Aladwa are incomplete, a court has been told.
Mr Aladwa was to be charged with incitement to violence following the remarks he made at a public rally in Kibera recently but will continue to enjoy freedom after he was granted bail.
The Nairobi ODM chairman was arrested on Saturday.
The court directed that bail terms he was granted at Kilimani Police Station to remain in force.
Mr Aladwa was granted a cash bail of Sh20,000 pending closure of investigations and formal charging in court.
High court Judge Joseph Onguto directed Mr Aladwa to cooperate with investigators and honour summonses when required to.
His lawyers told the judge that they were yet to file a petition challenging his prosecution and promised to do so in seven days.
The Director of Public Prosecutions, Inspector General of Police and the Directorate of Criminal Investigations, who are listed as respondents in the petition, are also expected to file their responses within 14 days.
Mr Aladwa, the Cord coalition politician and former Prime Minister Raila Odinga’s staunch supporter, promised to cooperate with investigators and not to interfere with witnesses.
Dr Nicodemus Maingi, from the DPP’s office, and Mr Aladwa’s lawyers will return to court on Friday for further directions.
