Former National Social Security Fund (NSSF) boss Alex Kazongo has announced he will vie for the Migori governor’s seat if the Supreme Court upholds the Court of Appeal decision to nullify the election of Mr Okoth Obado.

The Supreme Court will rule on the matter on Wednesday after Mr Obado obtained temporary orders to remain in office following a successful election petition filed by Prof Edward Oyugi of ODM. (READ: Court ruling dampens campaigns in Migori)

Mr Kazongo, who was the NSSF managing trustee for three years until 2012, joins an already strong field of prospective ODM candidates. Others who have declared their intention include Prof Oyugi, former Cabinet minister Ochillo Ayacko and businessman Mark Nyamita.

“I am looking forward to running for governor of Migori County after having studied the significance and impact of the position. This is conditional on the outcome of the Supreme Court case,” Mr Kazongo said.

Since leaving NSSF two years ago, he has kept a low profile. But he told the Sunday Nation that his decision to join politics is out of conviction that he would do a better job in managing the county with education, infrastructure, health and agriculture topping his agenda. He believes his experience in governance and management at senior levels in various organisations will come in handy if elected governor.

But like other prospective ODM aspirants, the new entrant faces uncertainty as some party leaders have hinted Prof Oyugi should be given direct nomination for filing a successful petition.
