Probe CS Anne Waiguru, demand three MPs

What you need to know:

  • MPs say Waiguru should carry her own cross if found to have approved questionable payments.
  • “If there are skeletons her closet, she should be investigated like her colleagues.”

Three MPs from western Kenya want the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission to investigate the theft of Sh826 million at the National Youth Service.

Mumias East MP Benjamin Washiali, Mr Ayub Savula (Lugari) and Mr Emmanuel Wangwe (Navakholo) said Devolution and Planning Cabinet Secretary Anne Waiguru should carry her own cross if found to have approved questionable payments to suppliers and contractors.

“If there are skeletons her closet, she should be investigated like her colleagues,” Mr Washiali said.

Mr Savula, however, said Ms Waiguru should not be condemned unheard, saying she had improved service delivery at the NYS.

“It should be remembered that Ms Waiguru initiated investigations into this matter,” he said.

His attempt to defend the CS appeared to create discomfort among his colleagues at the press conference.

When he persistently spoke her favour, Mr Washiali interrupted: “We are not here to defend Waiguru.”

That prompted Mr Savula’s response: “I don’t know Anne Waiguru.I have never met her but I support the good things she has done.”

REVEAL TRUTH

Mr Wangwe said the final judgment on Ms Waiguru should come after completion of investigations.

“It is important that this matter be investigated so that the truth can be revealed and action taken,” he said.

At the same time, the lawmakers appealed for action against individuals accused of running down Mumias Sugar Company.

“We are meeting President Kenyatta this morning to finalise the release of Sh1 billion bailout expected this week,” Mr Washiali said.

They dismissed Cord MPs from western who recently called on opposition leader Raila Odinga to help salvage the troubled sugar miller.
