A Parliamentary committee plans to tour France and Canada early next year investigate the procurement of biometric voter registration kits by the electoral commission.

Public Accounts Committee chairman Ababu Namwamba said the committee will be joined by auditor-general officials. It will meet Canadian MPs to shed light on the government-to-government financing that led to the purchase of the machines. (READ: Elections bosses face Sh1.3bn tender charges)

“The whole financing raises queries and our investigations on the matter will complement that being undertaken by the auditor-general’s office,” he said. Mr Namwamba said the fact that the Canadian government lent money to Kenya and then a Canadian firm went on to supply the equipment raised suspicion. (READ: MPs to meet envoys over poll kits tender)

The committee has directed the auditor-general to conduct investigations on the tendering for purchase of electoral materials, including electronic results transfer equipment, metal detectors, biometric voter registration kits and solar lanterns amounting to Sh6 billion.
