  • Supported by their colleagues from the region in the Jubilee Coalition, the MPs said the decision by Cord at the Parliamentary Group meeting on Tuesday to remove Mr Mungaro was unfair.
  • Mr Mungaro’s removal is based on the perception that he has contributed to Cord’s poor performance in the House by failing to rally the Opposition MPs as he should as a Whip.

Cord MPs from the Coast region have rejected the opposition coalition's resolution that they nominate a replacement for Gideon Mungaro as Minority Whip in the National Assembly.

Supported by their colleagues from the region who belong to the ruling Jubilee coalition, they said the decision by Cord at the Parliamentary Group meeting on Tuesday to remove Mr Mungaro was unfair.

“In the laws of natural justice, Gideon Mungaro should have been given a fair hearing dictating what he has done. Mungaro has every right to be heard and the decision made yesterday was unlawful and discriminatory,” they said in a statement read by Mvita MP Abdulswamad Nassir.

'WE EARNED IT'

“This position was not a favour. We earned it by our numbers in the National Assembly. Leadership in the House does not comprise one position and if there is a problem with the leadership in the House, let it be addressed as a problem of the leadership,” said Mr Nassir.

The effort to remove Mr Mungaro is based on the perception that he had contributed to Cord’s poor performance in the House by failing to rally the opposition MPs as he should as a Whip.

An earlier attempt to remove him at the beginning of the year was thwarted after the same group of MPs refused to nominate a replacement for him and threatened to break away from the coalition.
