Big names carry the day in Coast ODM primaries

What you need to know:

Big guns carried the day as others lost out in the Coast Orange Democratic Movement nominations that were characterised by chaos and confusion.
Mombasa woman representative Mishi Mboko and her Kilifi counterpart Aisha Jumwa easily bagged the tickets for the Likoni and Malindi parliamentary seats respectively.
Ms Mboko got 5,935 votes against her rival, Mr Hamisi Domoko’s 3,294, while Ms Jumwa garnered 8,436 votes against MP Willy Mtengo’s 3,758.
Mr Mtengo however disputed the results and threatened to ditch the party if they are not nullified.
In Kilifi South constituency, Mr Ken Chonga won by 8,862 votes compared to his rival’s Mrima Wanyepe’s 2,552 while in Kwale, Plan International Uganda country director Issa Chipera won governor’s ticket with 7,085 votes against his closest rival, Kwale Speaker Sammy Ruwa’s 6,649.
Mr Mwarapayo Mohamed got 3,438 while Mr Gereza Dena managed 3,501.
SENATOR'S BROTHER
Dr Chipera is likely to face Jubilee Party hopeful Salim Mvurya and Wiper’s Chirau Mwakwere in the August polls.
Governor Mvurya who was elected on ODM ticket had defected to Jubilee.
In the Senate race, the late senator Boy Juma Boy’s brother Issa Juma Boy bagged the ODM ticket with 15,307 votes against Kwale ODM vice-chairman Nicholas Zani’s 4,832.
Mr Zani is a brother of ODM secretary general Agnes Zani.
Kwale has had no senator since the death of Boy Juma Boy two months ago.
CREDIBILITY OF RESULTS
In the Kwale woman representative race, nominated MP Zuleikha Juma carried the day with 11,320 votes against her challenger Fatuma Masito’s 8,677 while in Msambweni, MP Suleiman Dori got 2,780 to defeat his arch-rival, Bongwe-Gombato MCA ,Omar Idd Boga who got 1965.
Kinango parliamentary aspirant Benjamin Tayari Daly garnered 6,073 to beat his rival Seth Kamanza Mwatela who managed 946.
In Mombasa, the nomination results for the Senate and woman representative were not announced because of a dispute in Changamwe, Jomvu and Kisauni where widespread irregularities were reported.
Returning officer Moris Odhiambo said the results were not credible.
Mr Odhiambo said the Kisauni presiding officer abandoned the constituency tallying centre following a heated dispute.
ALI LOSES
While voting was not conducted at Mikindani and Bangladesh polling stations in Jomvu constituency, the Changamwe polls were marred by violence after MP Omar Mwinyi stormed Bomu polling station with his supporters and destroyed voting materials.
Police picked him up after the incident.
“We will wait for the party elections board to make a decision on the disputed areas,” Mr Odhiambo said and termed as null results that have been circulating indicating that former Trade executive Hamisi Mwaguya had won the senatorial ticket.
Lawyer Mohamed Faki had also declared victory in the same race.
The seat is currently held by Wiper Secretary General Hassan Omar, who is vying for the gubernatorial seat.
In Nyali constituency, journalist Mohammed Ali, who lost the seat to his bitter rival Said Abdallah Salim, vowed to appeal to the National Elections Board.
Mr Salim alias Saido got 3,671 against Mr Ali’s 2, 987 .
WARD WINNERS
The ODM election team also said there were no results for Changamwe and Jomvu parliamentary seats.
Earlier results in Changamwe had shown MP Mwinyi had 2,998 votes, while his rival Goshi Juma got 803 votes.
In Tana River, former Galole MP Dhadho Godhana was leading the race for the governor’s ticket with 11,969 votes from 47 polling stations across the county.
His closest challenger, Adam Barisa had 4,042 votes with results from 33 polling stations expected before the conclusion of the tallying.
In Likoni, MCAs Abdallah Kasagamba (Likoni), Suleiman Boma (Bofu), Mohammed Madundo (Shika Adabu) and Tom Ogallo (Timbwani) lost in the primaries.
In Likoni ward, Mr Athman Mwamiri scooped 645 votes against Mr Kasagamba’s 163 while Mr Hemed Salama won with 674 votes in Bofu ward against Mr Boma’s 393 .
