Cord picks experts to lead referendum quest

The Coalition for Reforms and Democracy (Cord) has set up a committee of experts to spearhead its call for a referendum.
Lawyer Paul Mwangi has been named chairman of the team, whose other members are Kethi Kilonzo, Khelef Khalifa and Beatrice Kituyi.
The team is expected to ensure "participation in the proposed referendum and formulation of the referendum question."
The committee's mandate also includes collecting and collating one million signatures to initiate the referendum.
LAPSED OPPORTUNITY
On July 7, during the Saba Saba rally, Cord said it would push for a national referendum on "critical challenges" facing the country, saying the opportunity for dialogue with the government had lapsed.
Earlier, the coalition held a series of political rallies countrywide to push for talks with the Jubilee-led government.
The rallies ended with the Saba Saba rally, where Cord leaders announced 13 resolutions, which included pushing for a referendum and forming the Okoa Kenya movement.
The movement would "defend our Constitution, protect the gains we have made in democratic governance and rededicate ourselves to national unity and peaceful co-existence."
