Director of Public Prosecutions Keriako Tobiko has directed Director of Criminal Investigations Ndegwa Muhoro to urgently probe former Nairobi mayor George Aladwa over offensive utterances.

Mr Tobiko said the utterances are in a video clip that has been replicated and widely circulated on social media and posted on the website of the Star newspaper.

In a letter copied to Inspector-General of Police Joseph Boinnet on Thursday, Mr Tobiko directed Mr Muhoro to immediately ensure Mr Aladwa was interrogated.

“Conduct a speedy investigation into the offensive utterances and forward the file with the result of the inquiry to this office for appropriate action,” Mr Tobiko said.

Mr Aladwa allegedly made the remarks that spurred outrage on social media at a rally in Kibera. The video was posted to Facebook and Twitter.

NCIC INVESTIGATIONS

Earlier on Friday, the National Cohesion and Integration Commission (NCIC) said it had initiated investigations into the utterances purportedly made by Mr Aladwa.

“We, however, have not received an official clip as stipulated by the Evidence Act. We are still relying on the clips that are available online, for our investigation,” said NCIC Commission Secretary Hassan Mohammed.

NCIC chairman Francis Kaparo told the Nation by phone that he had directed NCIC investigators to collaborate with police officers from the DCI to analyse the clips.

“I have personally watched those that were sent to me by a number of citizens and I cannot believe that such a respectable person could make such utterances. It is despicable and terrible and such a person should not even be a leader,” said Mr Kaparo, who is in Isiolo for a meeting.

He asked political leaders to refrain from making statements that could compromise the peaceful coexistence of Kenyans.

Kenyans took to social media to express their disappointment at the statements made by Mr Aladwa through the hashtag #ArrestAladwa. Mr Aladwa could not be reached for comment.
