Deputy President William Ruto has dismissed a bid by MPs to reduce allocations to counties in the 2015/2016 financial year.

Mr Ruto assured county governments that the Sh258billion earmarked to the devolved units would not be slashed.

He was responding to pleas by senators Mutula Kilonzo Jr (Makueni), Billow Kerrow (Mandera) and Makueni Governor Kivutha Kibwana that he intervenes so that the money is not reduced.

The MPs want to reduce the cash to Sh245billion.

“I want to assure you that the Sh258billion we had agreed to allocate to counties remain as planned and no reduction will be done,” said Mr Ruto.

The DP spoke at Wambuli in Mbooni Constituency, Makueni County after laying a foundation stone for Wambuli Technical Training Institute.

He said the government will ensure the success of devolution for the sake of development at the grassroots.

Mr Ruto also announced that the government would use Sh23billion to construct Thwake Dam in Makueni to provide water for domestic use and irrigation.

“We know the greatest challenge here is water and I am sure construction of this dam will be a big relieve to people in this county,” added Mr Ruto.

The deputy president also challenged leaders to unite Kenyans instead of engaging in too much politics.
