When Senator Otieno Kajwang’ called his mother, Mama Dorcas Ajwang’, two weeks ago, he had a special request: A pastor to pray for him.

While she could not reveal to the Nation the finer details of the prayer request, Mama Ajwang’ said she found a pastor from the Seventh-day Adventist Church to pray for the senator, who died on Tuesday night.

“I spoke to him two weeks ago when he asked me to pray for him as part of the SDA prayer week.

“He requested me to ask our pastor to pray for him and even sent Sh3,000 for the pastor’s transport,” she told the Nation at her Waundo home in Homa Bay.

The pastor agreed to conduct the prayer session at the senator’s home even though Mama Ajwang’ could not find time to brief his son on the meeting.

That is the last time mother and son spoke. She last saw the senator in September when he was at Waundo.

“I was looking forward to his next visit. I’ve lost a jewel. He was an obedient and jovial son who liked to help people regardless of their background,” she said.

Hundreds of Homa Bay residents on Wednesday thronged Mr Kajwang’s home to mourn the death of their senator.

Earlier, panic had gripped the village when the senator’s father, Mzee David Ajwang’ Nyakwamba, 86, was taken to the Aga Khan Hospital in Kisumu after receiving the news of his son’s death on Wednesday morning.

The senator’s younger brother, Mr Samwel Kitegi, told the Nation that they had intended not to break the news to the old man, but he eventually received it through a telephone call from a friend.

Senator Kajwang’s death came barely four days after he survived a road accident at Othoro market on the Sondu-Oyugis road.

A hired Toyota Prado he was using hit a pothole and rolled three times on Friday. The senator was heading to an ODM meeting in Oyugis.

The senator joked about the accident during the meeting with his party colleagues, saying he was as a fit as a fiddle and ready to continue with the Okoa Kenya referendum campaign.

His bodyguard, Mr Michael Ouma Kaoga, was injured.
