The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission has cleared Mombasa Governor Hassan Joho of corruption claims over the allocation of a market.

Director of Public Prosecutions Keriako Tobiko said in a statement on Wednesday that he had received Mr Joho’s file from the EACC.

Mr Tobiko said the anti-corruption commission recommended the file be closed for lack of evidence.

“The … file shall be independently reviewed and a decision thereon made based on the evidence and law,” Mr Tobiko stated.

Mr Joho’s name was on the EACC list — handed over to President Uhuru Kenyatta — of officials and leaders being investigated for corruption.

He was linked to the allocation of the Mwembe Tayari Market to Nawal Business Centre.

Mr Joho defended himself against the accusations of corruption, saying he was not involved in the allocation of the market.

He said the process of allocating the market was initiated and completed nearly 20 years ago, long before Mombasa became a county and before he became governor.
