What you need to know:

  • The crowd booed the governor when he was invited by Bungoma Senator Moses Wetang’ula to welcome party leader Raila Odinga.
  • When called to address the crowd, Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka attempted to plead with them to allow Dr Kidero to speak but they would hear none of it.

Nairobi Governor Evans Kidero on Saturday came face to face with the dirty side of politics after his bid to address thousands of Cord supporters at Uhuru Park floundered.

The crowd booed the governor when he was invited by Bungoma Senator Moses Wetang’ula to welcome party leader Raila Odinga.

Chants of “we do not want him! We do not want him! He abandoned the party!” rent the air the moment Mr Wetang’ula mentioned his name.

Former Deputy Speaker Farah Maalim then took the microphone, hoping that, when invited back, the governor would be able to address the crowd, but his gesture was futile as the crowd was determined not to listen to Mr Kidero.

Surprisingly, a number of ODM MPs in attendance were enjoying the moment.

FIGHTING 'BABA'

“He must know where he belongs. You do not fight Baba and get away with it,” one of the legislators who was standing next to the podium said.

When called to address the crowd, Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka attempted to plead with them to allow Dr Kidero to speak but they would hear none of it.

“I want to beg you, it will be too bad if we do not accord him an opportunity to talk, please allow him to talk,” Mr Musyoka beseeched. At that moment, the supporters were beginning to turn their rage on him and he gave up.

Dr Kidero has been involved in what analysts see as shadow boxing with Mr Odinga with some ODM members claiming that he is plotting to succeed the former premier in Luo Nyanza politics.

Dr Kidero has always maintained he is in good terms with Mr Odinga and accused his critics of expecting him not to have any contact with the national government.
