Former Moyale MP Guyo Halake has been shot dead by unknown assailants.

Police spokesperson Gatiria Mboroki said Mr Halake was killed as he arrived home from prayers on Wednesday night.

She said an unknown number of gunmen entered the former MP’s compound and shot him four times. They fled without taking anything.
“We are yet to establish the motive of the killing, which seems to have been well-organised,” Ms Mboroki said.

Mr Halake was participating in talks to try and bring peace between the feuding Degodia and Garreh communities.

WENT ON THE RAMPAGE

After the attack, Moyale residents went on the rampage to protest insecurity in the area, damaging an Administration Police vehicle.
Four police officers were injured when the protesters threw stones at them.

Marsabit Governor Ukur Yatani Thursday morning, appealed for calm.

He said the killing was a criminal act and had nothing to do with the ethnic clashes.

“It is very sad that we have lost a great champion of peace to an act of crime. He was instrumental in trying to bring our people together,” he said.

Inter-clan fighting in the area has resulted in the deaths of dozens of people and displacement of others.

A week ago, Mandera governor Ali Roba survived an explosive attack.
