Foot the bill for vote, MP tells Opposition

What you need to know:

  • “No taxpayers’ money should be used to fund the referendum. Let those behind it, Cord leader Raila Odinga, his co-principals, former presidential candidates Martha Karua and Peter Kenneth bear the cost,” Mr Kuria said.

Cord leaders should be prepared to shoulder the cost of the referendum as Parliament will not approve money for it, Gatundu South MP Moses Kuria has said.

He said the burden should not be borne by taxpayers, but by those who are pushing the agenda.

Speaking at the Martyrs of Uganda Catholic Church in Gatundu Town, the MP said Jubilee will use its numbers in the House to block funds meant to finance the vote.

“No taxpayers’ money should be used to fund the referendum. Let those behind it, Cord leader Raila Odinga, his co-principals, former presidential candidates Martha Karua and Peter Kenneth bear the cost,” Mr Kuria said.

He said the drive is aimed at bringing down the Jubilee administration and is tied to the International Criminal Court cases against President Uhuru Kenyatta and his deputy Mr William Ruto.

The MP said Jubilee will hold its own referendum “at our own cost in which we shall put a clause on the age limit of presidential candidates and peg allocation money to counties on population.”

Mr Kuria said The National Alliance will have a meeting of all its elected leaders on Wednesday to discus the Cord plebiscite.

He took issue with the Opposition for collecting signatures without fielding the referendum questions. Mr Kuria accused Cord of harbouring a “hidden agenda.”
