A man was Tuesday charged with sending offensive messages to Deputy President William Ruto.

The prosecution said Mr Dedan Alpha Marenya improperly used a licensed telecommunication system.

The court was told that the 23-year-old sent the abusive text on December 15 using his Safaricom line. Mr Marenya is believed to have sent up to 30 messages to the DP.

State lawyer Dancun Ondimu said the prosecution had already received a report from the company confirming that the messages were sent by the accused.

NOT BE RELEASED ON BOND

He said Mr Marenya should not be released on bond since the prosecution could amend his charges.

“We request that his bond terms should not to be considered until investigations are complete,” Mr Ondimu said, adding that a mental examination on the accused showed that he was fit to stand trial.

Police said Mr Marenya also sent similar messages to President Uhuru Kenyatta.

Mr Marenya allegedly sent the offensive messages after his calls to the two leaders went unanswered.

He will remain in custody until January 6, 2015 when his bond request will be reviewed. Hearing of his case will be on March 27.
